Champaign – William Hall Christie Maxwell, 80 of Champaign, IL passed away at 4:27 pm Monday (April 18, 2016) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Visitation will be from 10am to 12 noon on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at Morgan Memorial Home 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy, Illinois 61874.

Memorial Services will be at 2:30pm on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church, Champaign.

He was born January 25, 1936 in Coleraine, Co. Londonderry, Northern Ireland to William Robert Maxwell and Catherine Dempsey Maxwell. He married his beloved wife Carolyn McLaughlin of Kingston, ON, Canada on September 28, 1960.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn and children Katrina (Herve) Maxwell-Balloux of Fountainbleau, France, Kevin (Jeffrey) Maxwell of San Diego, CA, Wendy (Brian) Borglum of Calgary, AB, Canada Liam (Kirsten) Maxwell of Lake Villa, IL, and his sister Dorothy (Desmond) Sweeney of Belfast N. Ireland, Mother-in-law Helen McLaughlin Kingston, ON, Canada, Sister-in-law Diane (John) Harkness of Edmonton AB, Canada as well as his much loved grand children Caroline, Emilie, Olivia, Haldan, Erika, Gweneth, Jonas, Erin and his nieces Sharon, Zara, Keara and JoAnne and his nephews Sean, Barry and Jeffrey, many friends and colleagues.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Irene Harvey (2-10-2013).

He proudly served in the British Army, OTC (Territorial Army) from 1955-56.

He earned Bachelors and Masters degrees from Queen’s University of Belfast N. Ireland and Queen’s University of Kingston Ontario, Canada and a PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1964 joining the faculty in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at the University of Illinois that same year serving as Professor and Professor Emeritus until 1996.

He was known for his sharp sense of humor, devotion, loyalty and value of fairness and service in the community and congregation. He and Carolyn enjoyed travel to many of the nations parks and memorials taking multiple road trips to northern Illinois, the Great Lakes, Montana and Calgary while never missing an opportunity to spend time by the water. He was especially fond of his Wednesday morning coffee group and attending University Club dinner dances with his wife.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the providers and nurses who provided incredible care to him over the years.
