Clyde S. Smith, 80, of Champaign passed away peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 5, 2018.

He was born on March 24, 1938, in Paris, Ky., the son of William Warren and Anna Lee Smith. They preceded him in death.

Clyde S. Smith, 80, of Champaign passed away peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 5, 2018.

He was born on March 24, 1938, in Paris, Ky., the son of William Warren and Anna Lee Smith. They preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Lewis Smith. Also surviving are his brother, Ronnie Smith of Salt Springs, Fla.; son, Bill (Margy) Smith of Chatham; daughter, Liz (Terry) Cooley of Mahomet; grandchildren, Taylor (James) Nugent of Tolono, Blake and Maddy Smith of Chatham, Gracie and Lillian Cooley of Mahomet and three great-grandchildren, Destiny, Ayden and Arianna.

Clyde was a graduate of Bourbon County High School and Eastern Kentucky University. He received a National Science Foundation Scholarship to attend Ohio State University, where he received his Master of Arts.

Clyde taught at Bethel High School, Jefferson Middle School and Champaign Central High School where he taught chemistry and physics until he retired in 1993. His classes enjoyed making peanut brittle and home-made ice cream. He also sponsored the Central HS Key Club. An avid photographer, he photographed hundreds of weddings.

An active member of the CU Noon Kiwanis Club, he was Kiwanian of the year in 89-90 and had also served as Secretary and Lieutenant Governor. He was named Lay Person of the year by the Champaign-Urbana Jaycees in 1980. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a fan of all Illini sports, especially women’s volleyball.

A faithful member of University Place Christian Church, Clyde had served as an elder, trustee and Chairman of the Board. He was Chairman of the Board of the Illinois Disciples Foundation and had been active in Bible Study Fellowship for many years. A lifelong traveler, he had visited every state and numerous foreign countries. Clyde faithfully attended the Senior Men’s Coffee Group which met at the Stevick Senior Citizens Center at The News-Gazette. He enjoyed playing duplicate bridge at Ginger Creek Bridge Studio and with other bridge groups.

A celebration of Clyde’s life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018, at University Place Christian Church in Champaign. The visitation will precede the service from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Burial will be at Grove Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville, Ky., on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to University Place Christian Church, Champaign, or the Kiwanis Club of Champaign-Urbana.
