Donald Lee Hawkins, 94, of Urbana passed away Thursday, March 8, 2018. Born November 27, 1923 in Bement Illinois, he was the son of Ray and Pearl Friend Hawkins.
Donald went to Ivesdale School in his younger years. In 1939-1940 he went to C.C.C. camp in Wisconsin before training at Camp Carson, Colorado. From there, He was sent to Camp Hale, Colorado to be in the 10th Mountain Ski Troop. He was a part of the 10th Mountain Division in the Army from 1943 until 1946. He was stationed in Naples, Italy until the end of the war serving as mule patrol.
After returning home, he worked for Illinois Power Company as a lineman for local IBEW 51 for 30 years before his retirement in 1984. He married the love of his life, Floella Kirby, on November 29, 1948 in Danville. She preceded him in death on April 18, 2014.
He was a member of the Champaign- Urbana Health Club, Mahomet Lodge 240, and the Homer Lodge 94. He was a member of the Knights of Templar, Ansar Temple Shrine, Illini Shrine, True Krindid #15, Post 24. He was a member of the 101 Lodge in Ogden no. 75 H and the VFW Post 5520 for both over 50 years.
He is preceded in death by his siblings Mary Whitmore, Ray Hawkins Jr., and Dorothy Danenhour.
He is survived by son, Terry L. (Liz) Hawkins; grandchildren, Amber and Ian Hawkins; and two great-grandchildren, Aaron Aleman and Aria Hawkins.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Mayview.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Dr. West, Savoy. Masonic rites will be at 4:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ogden Lodge 754, or to the donor’s choice.
