Dr. John Roger Powell, 83, was born on September 11, 1934 and passed away peacefully at his home on October 4th, 2017. He was born in Urbana and was the son of John and Muriel Powell. He married JoAnn Winterhalter on November 21, 1959. She preceded him in death. He later married Kathleen Due Tresslar on June 25, 2005. She survives.
Also surviving are his children, Kathy James of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Tim Powell (Tracy) of Tustin, California, Terry Powell (Catalina) of Los Angeles, California; step-children, Tim Tresslar (Shauna) of Sylvania, Ohio, Greg Tresslar (Stephanie) of White Heath, Kelly Sellek (Kyle) of Monticello, and Sean Tresslar of Champaign; grandchildren, Brittany, Justin, Morgan, Julia, and Patrick; step-grandchildren, Tinley, Teagan, Kole, Avery, and Carson; siblings Morgan Powell (Terri) and Julann Boatner (John).
He was an active member of the St. Matthew Catholic Church. He will be remembered for his Illini spirit, Irish heritage, and affinity for helping others both personally and professionally.
He delivered over 10,000 babies. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1959 with an M.D. Degree and completed his residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago in 1963. He held certifications with the National Board Medical Examiners and American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. From 1963-2002, he practiced at Carle Foundation Hospital and was courtesy staff at Mercy Hospital, McKinley Hospital, and Paris Community Hospital. He held academic appointments as a Clinical Associate Professor at University of Illinois School of Clinical Medicine as well as Medical Director and Vice President at Carle Clinic Association from 1980-1991.
Dr. Roger Powell’s visitation is today October 6, 2017 from 5:00PM – 7:00PM at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy. A Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 7, 2017 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1303 Lincolnshire Dr., Champaign. Entombment will be in Mt. Hope Mausoleum, Champaign.
