Gordy, son of Rev. Millard and Rebecca (Swartz) Wilson, was born in Roanoke, Virginia on June 14, 1939. He married Connie (Fiock) Wilson and was happily married for 42 years. Survivors include, his wife, his four sons Paul of San Diego, CA, Gavin (Mary) of Dekalb, IL, Ryan (Melissia) of Saint Joseph, IL, Cory (Tanya) of Urbana,IL.; six grandchildren, Holden(Alessandra), Adam, Corbin, Joel, Jaelynn and Josephine, and a brother Kenneth Wilson of New York City. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Francis and a brother Norman.
Gordy graduated from Covington High School in Covington, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Music in applied piano from Miami University of Ohio in 1961, and his Master of Music theory and composition from the University of Illinois in 1963. He worked at the School of Music, the House of Baldwin, toured Canada with the ABC (Lincicome) triplets, played at Western Bowl, and was the owner and operator of Keyboard Studio where he gave music lessons. He was also the music director and organist at Grace United Methodist Church in Urbana for 30 years. Gordy was the director of the Contemporary Service at First United Methodist Church in Champaign. He played for the U of I Campus Service Recognition Banquet for 30 years. For the past 10 years, Gordy and his son Gavin produced and performed, along with his two oldest grandsons, in the annual variety show benefit for the Historic Egyptian Theatre in Dekalb, IL; an event he was very passionate about. Many people will remember Gordy for performing at many events and venues throughout the Midwest. When asked to play any song, He would respond “If I don’t know it I will fake it.” From 2014 to the present Gordy was the accompanist for the Champaign Central High School choirs, a job he dearly loved. His love of music was second only to the love he had for his family. Gordy touched many lives through music and will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Gordy’s name to Champaign Central Music Boosters, PO Box 1226, Champaign, IL 61824.
