John S. (Jack) Downes, 84, of Champaign died at 4:16 p.m. Friday, December 28, 2018 at home.

John S. (Jack) Downes, 84, of Champaign died at 4:16 p.m. Friday, December 28, 2018 at home.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2019 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Champaign. Rev. Fr. Lee Brokaw officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Champaign. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Morgan Memorial Home, Savoy with a rosary service at 4:45 p.m.
John was born on June 5, 1934 in Chicago, the son of Synan J. and Mary O’Brien Downes. He married Loretta C. Lyons on August 18, 1956 in Chicago, she died on July 19, 1997. He then married Pauline Boggess Serd on September 25, 1999 in Danville, she survives.
Also surviving are four sons; Jack Downes of Houston, Texas, Jim Downes of Chicago, Michael (Sue) Downes of St. Joseph, Brennan (Lizbeth) Downes of Chicago, three daughters; Debbie (Todd) Parkhurst of St. Louis, Missouri, Laura (Scott) Leasure and MaryBeth Downes of Franklin, Tennessee, son-in-law; Conley Nicholson of Oakwood, three step-daughters; Tamara Reichert of Chandler, Arizona, Jennifer (Barry) Greenberg of Buffalo Grove, Stephanie (Chris) Sturm of Poplar Grove, 13 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and three brothers; Tom Downes of Alexander, Virginia, Jerry (Judy) Downes of Elmwood, Tennessee and Jim Downes of Nashville, Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by his daughter; Jean Nicholson.
John served in the Navy on the USS Naifeh De352 during the Korean Conflict.
He was a licensed plumber and member of the Local Union 130, Chicago since 1952.
John was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Champaign where he served as an usher, a member of the Knights of Columbus Twin City Council #891, where he served as Past Grand Knight from 1985-1987, Past Faithful Navigator, Fourth Degree Twin City Assembly #220, and Former District Deputy.
He was a lifetime member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, lifetime member of the Northern Illinois Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, Chairman of the USS Naifeh Reunion Club in 2002, Charter member of ASPE, Illinois Chapter of ASPE, lifetime member American Legion Post 24, lifetime member VFW Post 5520, Board member of the City of Champaign Code Enforcement Board of Appeals.
Many thanks to the staff of Christie Clinic Oncology Department, OSF Hospital, the OSF Home Care Nurses, and Transitions Hospice Nursing Team for all the wonderful care and love that they showed Jack.
