His junior year he joined the Army National Guard of Illinois, Co F, 130th Infantry & was honorably discharged August 1957 to enlist in the US Army. After ballistic missiles & nuclear weapons training in New Mexico & Alabama, he was assigned to the 91st Ordinance Co., 371.10 BM Guidance and Control and sent overseas. He was honorably discharged in 1960. Leonard was a proud veteran often wearing his Army veteran cap. When often thanked for his service, he would respond, “The honor was mine.” He was very proud of the recent Air Force enlistments of twin grandsons Colin & Cody.
DeVry Technical Institute, Chicago was his next stop graduating from DTI in 1962. He continued to work in electronics throughout his life at Magnavox Corp. & University of Illinois High Energy Physics Dept. for 23 years. He was owner of Seward Electronics for 50 plus years that he first began in high school repairing radios and sound equipment. In the early 1980s Seward Electronics entered the world of satellite TV installing EchoStar large dish satellite TV and by the mid-1990s Dish Net small dish satellite TV. Leonard retired his business in 2014.
Leonard married Sharon Croft of Effingham, IL October 15, 1961. They moved to Urbana, and later Pesotum, where they raised their three children. Leonard & Sharon actively supported their children’s many school activities in the Unity School District. Sharon passed away in 1996 after battling cancer.
Leonard was active in the Champaign County Republican party serving as its Vice Chair from 1978-1983 & 1987-1989; Chair from 1984-1986. Leonard made an unsuccessful bid for State Representative in 1976. He was Pesotum’s precinct committeeman from 1968-2000.
A familiar chant in Leonard’s life was I-L-L-I-N-I. He served as a football usher supervisor for many seasons; QB club Board Member; Rebounders member; attended the 1991 Rose Bowl & Final Four tournament games. For many seasons you could find him on the practice field sidelines with friends.
Singing praises to his Lord and Savior was special for Leonard. When Nancy learned a Christian men’s singing group was being organized by WGNN Radio manager Mark Burns, she encouraged Leonard to” attend the first meeting. In 1999 Leonard became Singing Men of ‘GNN member #7 and loved singing with his brothers in Christ for almost 20 years. And of course, you couldn’t have a Monday night rehearsal without a little fun and a joke or two!
Leonard created a secret popcorn recipe appropriately named by the grandchildren, “Grandpa’s Popcorn”. Leonard did tell Nancy the recipe so it could be written down for all in the future.
Leonard’s green thumb helped to grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers much to the delight of his family & friends. He was the gardener & Nancy preserved his bounty.
Leonard’s smile and laugh were enchanting which is what drew Nancy to him from the beginning. Leonard was known for his joke telling. They were always clean jokes, sometimes taking you close to the edge, but never over! He believed laughing was good for the soul. He never met a stranger. Whether it was a joke or witnessing about Jesus he had a way of drawing people in and making them feel good, even for a moment.
Leonard loved Jesus and believed that God through Jesus Christ has a plan. While each of us may not understand His plan and timing as it is presented, it is not ours to question. Leonard prayed he would be a part of God’s kingdom and he prayed for others to know Jesus, too. We have no doubt that he is in God’s kingdom today greeting, singing, & telling jokes! We look forward to seeing him again!
A private burial will be held at Arborcrest Memorial Park, Effingham at a later date.
Memorials may be given to Singing Men of ‘GNN, Great News Radio PO Box 550 Fisher, IL 61843-0550 or Meadowbrook Church 1902 S. Duncan, Champaign, 61822.
