Champaign – Marie Elizabeth Gourley, at the age of 90, went to be with the Lord on the night of December 11, 2015. Her loved ones surrounded her.

Marie was born to Jimmy and Lottie Agers on November 17, 1925 in Fountain Run, Kentucky. On October 2, 1948, she married the love of her life Fredrick F. Gourley.

She began her career answering to work at Mueter’s in Chicago building transistors for B17 bombers during WWII. One could say she was a “Rosie the Riveter.”

Once returning to Champaign, Marie worked at Kresgie’s Dime Store with the first soda fountain where she met the returning Staff Sgt. Fred. Lindale’s was searching for a waitress and she took on the job. She worked at the first local hangout for high school students with the first jukebox.

Later on, businessmen recruited her to come and work at Western Bowl with their full service dining room and bar. Her career furthered even more when she accepted a job as the head waitress at the Ramada Inn. Serving celebrities to businessmen, Marie always had a positive and welcoming spirit that always made them want to come back.

An avid outdoor person joining her husband and son on several hunting adventures, proving the size of the kitchen didn’t matter to prepare a great meal.

Her home will always be remembered as the kitchen that never closed. Everyone who came in was immediately offered a meal or two. This hospitality spirit has been handed down generation to generation.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Fred, her sister Vic C Burgess, and her brother James “Buck” Agers.

Surviving are: her sisters Junnetta Dillingham (Champaign, IL), and Earlene Quisenberry (Louisville, KY); her brother Rex Agers (Glasgow, KY), her three children Linda Davis (Dublin, OH), Howard (Nancy) Gourley (Urbana, IL), Sheila (Ayhan) Gourley-Ozhayta (Sidney, IL); her five grandchildren Travis (Jennifer) Gourley, Christopher Neeley, Brandon (Cindy) Neeley, Bryce (Sarah) Davis, and Saziye Gourley-Ozhayta. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren.

She will forever and always be deeply missed, but we rejoice by our faith and grace that she is in heaven today.
