Mary J Byrnes, 84, of Savoy passed away on August 1, 2016.  Mary was born the daughter of James and Anna (Blakley) Nolan on February 29, 1932 in Quincy, IL.  She was very proud to be a leap year baby and equally proud of her Irish heritage.  Mary graduated Quincy Notre Dame High School and worked at the AT&T Telephone Company as a switchboard operator.  She married Cecil Byrnes on November 1, 1956.   He died in June 2002.

 

Surviving are her children, Diane Ruedi of Savoy, Tom (Tina) Byrnes of Champaign, Tim Byrnes of Champaign and Colleen (Ron) Roseman of Champaign. Her grandchildren- Chris Ruedi, Shawn & Matt Byrnes, Lindsay, Jon, Kristen, and Nicholas Roseman, as well as her grand-dog, “Streets”, who was her constant companion.  Also surviving is her brother Joe (Karen) Nolan, of Jacksonville, IL.  She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Cecil, as well as her son, Kevin Byrnes, and brother, James Nolan.

 

She and her husband owned A-1 Alarm Service from 1968 – 2009.  Mary performed payroll and administrative work for the business.  Mary was an AVID St. Louis Cardinal and Illini fan.   She was also very knowledgeable about the history of the United States, as well as a movie enthusiast!   She also loved ordering from mail order magazines, it was not unusual for her to receive 30 magazine catalogs a day.  (The postmaster was very familiar with her address!)

 

The family would like to thank the Carle Cancer Center physicians and staff for their continuous kindness and compassion over the past three years.

 

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. with a rosary service at 4:30 P.M.  Thursday, August 4, 2016, at the Morgan Memorial Home 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy.  A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 5, 2016, at Holy Cross Church 405 West Clark Street, Champaign. Interment will follow at Bongard Cemetery rural Philo.

 

Memorials may be made to the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen or Champaign County Humane Society.
