Thomas E. Slade of Champaign, IL passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at the age of 78 years old.  He was born on January 10, 1943, to the late Dorothy and Artie Slade.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Richard “Dick” Slade, James “Jimmy” Slade, Ethel Lyon and David Slade.

He is survived by his two daughters Angela and Allison Slade, of Denver Colorado; two grandchildren Max and Jordan Rikon of Denver, CO; two brothers Robert “Bob” Slade of Mahomet, IL and Larry Slade of Champaign, IL; his sister Sandy Swain of Champaign, IL, and several nieces and nephews.

Tom started his career at 16 working for his brother Bob as a laborer in Champaign, IL.  Through years of dedicated work, he held many progressive positions within the trade.  A proud accomplishment was his involvement in the building of the Denver International Airport that opened in Colorado, 1995.  Tom
worked within the International Finishers Union and ultimately retired as Business Agent of the Plasterers and Cement Masons, Local Union 577 in Denver, CO.  He was a proud Union worker and longtime member of the American Legion in both Champaign and Urbana, IL where he cultivated many dear friendships and acquaintances over the years.

Tom’s two treasured hobbies were golfing and fishing.  He often teed off with family and friends at Lake of the Woods Golf Course and avidly fished his favorite spots which included Clinton Lake, Lake Erie, and Kentucky Lake, to name a few.  He hosted (and attended) many an annual fish fry over the years, where everyone gathered to enjoy favored fillets of Walleye and Crappie.  For those curious about his infamous Onion Ring Batter recipe – I regret to disclose he took that secret with him when he departed.  A topic to be revisited in the afterlife maybe, but I surmise he’ll still be as stingy with the details as he’d always been!  Tom was a dear friend and family member.  He will be missed and thought of often.

No services were held in accordance with Tom’s wishes but condolences are welcome and encouraged at morganmemorialhome.com.  A Celebration of Life is being coordinated for the Spring of 2022 in the Champaign-Urbana area.  Arrangements will be disclosed at a later date.  For all who wish to attend, this will be an opportunity to gather and share your stories of the memorable times you spent with Tom.
