Christine H. Johnston, 51, of Champaign passed away early Thursday morning (May 23, 2019) at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born the first child of Walter H. Cunnington, Jr. and Ellen (Nottebrok) on July 17, 1967 in Murphysboro, IL.
Christine is survived by her parents, her husband, Tony Johnston of Champaign, son Michael Braverman, daughter Brooke Braverman, step-son Jack Johnston, sister Jennifer C. Lundquist and husband Mark of Mahomet, IL, brother Walter H. “Terry” Cunnington III and wife Laurie of Taylorville, IL, six nieces and nephews, and beloved dog Bella.
Christine grew up in Champaign, was communed and confirmed at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church, attended Bottenfield Elementary School, Edison Middle School, and Central High School where she was a state-qualifying tennis player. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1989 with a degree in Urban Planning and was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. After graduation she moved to Chicago where she worked for Cellular One and became mother to her children. She later returned to Champaign where she met the true love of her life, Tony, and raised her children and step-son. Christine was active in the Junior League as chairperson of the Festival of Trees and served as the chairperson of the St. Matt’s Hospitality Committee. She was also a licensed Realtor with The Brokers Real Estate firm. She was a member of the Women’s Legacy Circle at Carle and together with her husband started an endowment for the support of the Carle Auxiliary Guest House.
Above all, Christine was a dedicated and loving mother, a devoted sister and daughter, a stalwart friend, and a faithful and loving wife who was committed to caring for the needs of others. Not only was she blessed with great physical beauty but also a heart full of fun and generosity for all that knew and loved her. She was an extraordinary cook and entertainer and will be remembered for her outstanding spaghetti sauce, mashed potatoes, and chocolate chip cookies. She had a personality that could fill a room with good cheer and was always a pleasure to be around. She possessed an uncanny sense of style that carried through her personal appearance as well as the impeccable decoration of her home. She glowed with pride when discussing the successes of her children and precious loved ones. She truly lived life for the satisfaction of others and rarely put her needs above those for whom she cared. She was a bright light in her family and the community of friends and acquaintances that she encountered, and her radiance will leave a legacy that will eternally be remembered. She will be greatly missed by many but forgotten by none.
A celebration of her life will be held June 21st from 4-7pm at the Champaign Country Club, with memorial program at 5:30pm that day. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family requests that memorials be made to the Christine and Tony Johnston Endowment Fund for the support of the Carle Guest House through the Carle Center for Philanthropy.
