Dr. Donald Arthur Fischer, 83 of Champaign, passed away at early Sunday, June 2, 2019 at his home.
Private graveside services will be held. A public memorial service was held June 13, 2019, at First Presbyterian Church, 302 W. Church St., Champaign with Rev. Matt Matthews officiating. Morgan Memorial Home, Savoy handled arrangements.
Dr. Fischer was born August 14, 1935 in Litchfield, the son of Walter H. Fischer and Elnora Grabruck Fischer. Don married Sue Anne Brown on February 26, 1976. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons; Jason Ward Fischer (Becky) of Bourbonnais, Adam David Fischer of Champaign and Timothy Michael Fischer of Carbondale; three granddaughters, Alexis Noelle Fischer, Abigail Rose Fischer and Lauren Ava Fischer, all of Bourbonnais; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dr. Paul Fischer, stepfather Willard Moser and Aunt Stella Ore.
Dr. Fischer was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He earned a medical degree from the U of I College of Medicine in Chicago. He completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at Illinois Central Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Fischer practiced General Surgery at Christie Clinic in Champaign. After retirement, he joined the occupational medicine department of Decatur Memorial Hospital and practiced there for several years. His professional organizations included: The American College of Surgeons, Illinois Surgical Society, Chicago Medical Society, AMA, ISMS, and the Champaign County Medical Society.
Dr. Fischer served as a medical volunteer in Vietnam with the AMA Volunteer Physicians Program. On June 11, 1972, he received the Humanitarian Award on behalf of the Champaign Medical Society. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi and Phi Kappa Phi Fraternities and Alpha Kappa Kappa Medical Fraternity. Dr. Fischer also received a Master of Science degree in Education at Eastern Illinois University in May of 1997. On July 16, 2012, he was initiated into the Fifty Year Club of the Illinois State Medical Society. Don served on the Board of Directors for the Illini Basketball Rebounders and was a loyal fan through the years. He served as a deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Champaign and served on the mission board as liaison for Safe House. He was a Hospice Volunteer and mentored in the local elementary schools.
He cherished most of all his time spent with his loving wife and dear family. He enjoyed poetry, books, the study and beauty of birds, and music. Loving and caring for four pet schnauzers through the years was a big part of their family life. Don was a devoted husband, father, grandpa, brother, friend, and a caring physician to his patients. He will be dearly missed.
