Elza Ray Hawkins, Jr., 93 of Savoy, formerly of Pesotum, died at 12:23 a.m. on Monday, January 12, 2015 at Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.

Elza Ray Hawkins, Jr., 93 of Savoy, formerly of Pesotum, died at 12:23 a.m. on Monday, January 12, 2015 at Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.

Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, rural Pesotum. Father Robert Lampitt will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Pesotum.

Mr. Hawkins was born April 20, 1921 in Decatur, a son of Elza Ray Sr. and Pearl Friend Hawkins. He married Margaret Kleiss on June 13, 1946 in Pesotum. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Darlene Hawkins of Champaign; two brothers, Donald of Urbana and David of Monticello; and one sister, Suzanna Massell of Urbana.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Mr. Hawkins attended Sadorus High School. He served in the Navy in World War II aboard the USS Newberry APA-158 for four years. He served on the Pesotum Town Board as town clerk for eight years.

He retired from the Agronomy Department at the University of Illinois with 30 years of service.

He was a member of the Champaign Fraternal Order of Eagles 0926, Champaign Urbana Elks Post 2497, and a life member of the Tuscola Moose 729.

He enjoyed music and dancing.

Memorials may be made to an organization of the donor’s choice.
