Gene Arthur Ward, formerly of Champaign, Illinois, was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on October 11, 1931, to Joseph Francis Ward and Catherine Parry Ward. He married Phyllis Scott on August 20, 1955, in Martinsville, Illinois.
His family includes his wife, Phyllis; son Christopher Ward; daughter Lisa Rawdin and husband John Rawdin; daughter Lori Ward and husband Scott Munzel; grandson Griffin Munzel; granddaughters Kara Rawdin Moody and husband Edward Moody; Mallory Munzel, and Callan Munzel; great granddaughter Emmery Moody; sisters JoAnne Armstrong and Janet Ramey. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Catherine Ward, and brothers Donald and Joseph Ward.
After graduating from Champaign High School in 1949, where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball, he attended Eastern Illinois College in Charleston, where he played football and baseball. He was a charter member of the Gamma Omega chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon and a member of Gamma Theta Upsilon National Professional Geographic Fraternity. After a two-year tour of duty in he U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, he graduated from Eastern with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He continued his education in the Master’s Program at the University of Illinois in the field of Recreation.
Gene taught and coached for 37 years; 33 of those years spent in the Champaign Unit #4 District. During his career he coached football, basketball, and was head track and field coach at Champaign Central High School for 17 years. He also was affiliated with the Champaign Park District as manager of the Centennial (Sholem) Pool for 15 years of its early operation.
He remained active with the CHS Class of ’49, Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, and with various educational and charitable organizations. He was brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, mentor and friend; and a coach/educator to thousands of students during his teaching career.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 30, 2019 12:00 – 3:00 pm at Jupiter’s at the Crossing, 2511 Village Green Place, Champaign, IL.
