Hermia G. Soo of Urbana, Illinois, 92, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2015 at Clark-Lindsey Village.

Beloved wife, mother, teacher, and friend, Hermia was born Gung-Tai Dan on November 3, 1922 in ChongQing, China, and was raised there as well as in Shanghai and Beijing.  A graduate of Ginling College in Nanjing, she came to the United States in 1949 to pursue graduate studies in piano.  In 1952 she met and married Shao-Lee Soo and seven years later they moved from Princeton, New Jersey, to Urbana.  There Hermia actively pursued her love of music and art as a pianist, piano teacher, and painter, while her husband worked as a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign until his retirement and death in 1998.  Hermia is survived by a sister, Joan Gong-Tao Dan of Rockville, Maryland; by her children, Shirley A. Soo of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, Lydia M. Soo of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and David D. Soo of Libertyville, Illinois; as well as by three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in late spring at Wesley Methodist Church, 1203 W. Green Street, Urbana, Illinois.

Memorial donations can be made to the Hermia G. Soo Family Scholarship Fund supporting the education of undergraduate women in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (University of Illinois Foundation, 1305 W. Green St., Urbana, Illinois 61801).
