Janet D. Knesek (née Scott), 64, of Savoy passed away peacefully early Friday morning, May 31, 2019 at home, with her husband Harvey at her side.
Janet was born on Dec. 13, 1954 in Urbana, IL. She attended Holy Cross Catholic School, Franklin Jr. High School, Champaign Central High School, Parkland College, and the University of Illinois. She had an amazing talent for cooking, which she put to good use as the co-owner and manager of Broadway & Green restaurant in Lincoln Square, and later as a cook at Tod and John’s in Urbana. Most recently Janet worked as a cook at Hendrick House at the University of Illinois, where she also took pride in helping establish and maintain the dorm’s beautiful rooftop organic garden.
Along with her talent for cooking, Janet loved to invite friends and family to her home, where she and her husband Harvey hosted fabulous pool-side parties. She had a green thumb: her vegetable garden supplied delicious produce throughout the summer and her yard and flower planters were always impeccably maintained and visually stunning. In her spare time Janet loved to read, particularly mystery novels; go to the movies; create and prepare new recipes; tailgate at University of Illinois football games; and get together with friends at local restaurants.
Janet was preceded in death by her father, Carroll E. Scott; her mother, Elizabeth Overholt Scott; and her brother, John Michael Scott.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Harvey Knesek; her sisters, Sharon (Hans Pein) Scott and Linda (Steven) Meyer; her brother, Robert (Cindy) Scott; her sisters-in-law, Julie (Ray) Rhein and Linda Gailus; her brother-in-law, Ted (Maria) Knesek; her aunt, Claire (Jeff) Love; her nephews, Matthew Meyer, Gregory (Jessica) Scott, and Justin (Mariah) Scott; great-nephews Miles Harris and Andrew Scott; and great-nieces Naomi DuPree, Justice Scott, and Samantha Scott.
The family would like to thank all of Janet’s friends, near and far, who helped her maintain her spirits by spending time with her and sending lovely cards and flowers to cheer her up during her long battle with cancer. We also deeply appreciate the members of the home hospice medical team from Transitions, who cared for Janet so compassionately during her final days. Finally, we would like to acknowledge Janet’s primary care physician, Dr. Charlotte Schuchart at Christie Clinic, who coordinated Janet’s care and unfailingly provided support and inspiration throughout every daunting challenge.
Per Janet’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded by Morgan Memorial Home, Savoy, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, cards, food and other expressions of sympathy, the family requests that memorials be made to a charity that focuses on conquering cancer and providing support to cancer patients and their families, such as the Leukemia Research Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Condolences may be made at www.morganmemorialhome.com.
