L.E. “Ernie” Rueter, 80 of Champaign passed away at 7:30 PM Saturday, May 9, at his home surrounded by his extended family. He was born January 30, 1935 in Homer, Illinois to Alvin Rueter and Ida Messman Rueter who preceded him in death.
He leaves his wife of 30 years Sandy Wood Reifsteck and daughters Shelly Jo Anzelmo (Chris), St. Joseph, IL, and Suzanne Price (Mike) of Austin, TX, and additional families of Julie Combest (Rod), Colorado, Jane Elliott (Bob), Champaign, and Rick Reifsteck (Teresa) Champaign; brother Marlin Rueter (Glenna) of Florida and sister, Madeline Ablinger (Frank) of California. He was the loving G’Pa Ernie for 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He loved golfing, traveling, and following the grandchildren in all their activities and sports. He never shared a harsh word and was always there for advice and support. He will be missed by this 31 member immediate family who love him dearly.
Mr. Rueter graduated from Tuscola High School in 1952 and attended the University of Illinois. He then served in the U.S. Army 11th Airborne Division from 1956-1958 and was awarded an expert rifle designation. Mr. Rueter farmed in the Mahomet area for over 30 years and was a realtor broker for Coldwell Banker for over 10 years. He was member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Champaign, IL and Desert Hills Lutheran Church in Green Valley, AZ where he and his wife spent winters for several years after retirement.
Ernie served on the Champaign County Farm Bureau Board, the Champaign County Zoning Board and Illinois Soybean Growers Board. He was a member of the Mahomet Lions Club and the Champaign Urbana Elks. As a member of Lincolnshire Fields Country Club he served as President in 1998.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday May 12, 2015 at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy, IL. Funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 with an additional visitation one hour prior to service. A Celebration of Life luncheon for family and friends will follow at Lincolnshire Fields Country Club at 2000 Byrnebruk Drive, Champaign. Private burial will be at a later date.
