Paul D. Bermingham, 78, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Amber Glen Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Urbana with his wife and two daughters at his side. Paul was born December 15, 1940 at the family farm in Thomasboro, Il. He was the son of William C. and Mary M. (Yeagle) Bermingham.
Paul attended Little Star Country Grade School, Thomasboro and Fisher High School, Fisher, Il. graduating in 1958. After graduation, he joined the Champaign National Guard where he was well known as an expert marksman. In 1960 he began his work career at the University of Illinois as a cabinet maker apprentice. During his 40 year career at the U of I he served as Foreman of the Mill, Foreman of the Carpenter Shop, Superintendent of Building Maintenance– currently known as Facilities & Services. He retired in 2000, and in March 2001 he was recognized as the Outstanding Professional honored for Excellence with CAPE (Chancellor’s Academic Profession Award). About Paul, the Chief Facilities Officer and Associate Vice Chancellor for Administration and Human Resources wrote the following: “There are VERY few people who consistently meet or rise above one’s expectations – seldom more than a handful for whom your respect actually increases over the years”. Following his retirement from the U of I, he was asked to return for one last special project. Paul himself had written: “On a personal note, while I was apprehensive about accepting this assignment, I have been gratified by the acceptance, cooperation, and support I have received as manager of the project. I thank all of the O&M Management Staff and Supervisors for that, and thanks Jack – for the opportunity to serve one more time!”
Paul was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Matthew Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Building and Grounds Committee and the Parish Center/Gymnasium Building Committee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers William J. Bermingham, Harold M. Bermingham; and his sisters Mary Josephine O’Connor, Lucy E. Hansens; and brothers-in-law Donald Miller, Donald Hansens, and Virgil O’Connor; and sister-in-law Rita (Flavin) Bermingham.
He is survived by his wife Doris (Miller) Bermingham, daughters Paula (Daniel) Maras of Tulsa, OK and Christa (Carl) McCaffrey of Geneva, Il., brother J. Daniel (Rachel) Bermingham, and sister-in-law Marjorie Bermingham, both of Thomasboro, 7 grandchildren: John, Michael, Rachel, Sarah, Paul Maras; Ryan and Cole Thomas.
Visitation will be held at Morgan Memorial Home, Savoy on Monday, March 4, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A Rosary Service will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home prior to visitation. A Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Champaign at 10:30 a.m. He will be laid to rest at St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Thomasboro.
The family would like to kindly thank Amber Glen Alzheimer’s Special Care Center nurses and staff and the Harbor Light Hospice of Illinois team for their loving care of Paul. Memorials may be made in Paul’s name to St. Matthew Catholic Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
