On Thursday, June 17, 2021, Stephen Lewis Bales, devoted father and grandfather, passed away at the age of 75.

Steve was born on March 13, 1946 to James Benton Bales and Lois Bales, nee Soloman, in Champaign, Illinois, as was his younger brother Kirk Bales, all of whom preceded him in death. The whole family lived most of their lives in Champaign; although, Steve served in the U.S. Navy from 1964-1974, and he was married and lived in Waukegan, Illinois, from 1975-1992. After returning to Champaign, he worked as a long-haul truck driver, a dispatcher, and at the time of his death, he was a manager at Auto Zone.

Steve is survived by his daughters: Erin and Kelly Bales; Kelly’s husband: Narisu “Huhnars” Huhe; and their children/Steve’s grandchildren: Gavin, Owen, and Zoey. He adored being a grandfather and insisted the kids call him “Donk,” saying that if it was good enough for Lord Grantham, then it was good enough for him. Steve was a car, NASCAR, and motorcycle enthusiast. He was an early adopter of technological gadgets, a fan of old films (especially musicals), a life-long Trekkie, and he harbored a mild addiction to Worcestershire Sauce. He will be greatly missed by his family members, friends, and coworkers.

His family held a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Feeding America.
